WHY I LIKE TATTOOING by DG Wilson Dec. 30, 2008 12:24 pm

In Past BLOG entries here on this site, (ART WHORE) I have been trying to discover the true meaning of art and the business of art. It is a very tough task because there seems to be quite a lot of people that do not think the same way that I, yes, even the artists themselves. So what is an Art Whore and what is a Fine Artist? Art Whore in general terms is an artist that turns their art to work for another, to describe THEIR vision not the artists. As I pointed out in previous entries that is a way that an artist can do their work AND pay the bills. At least they are able to bend their vision to fit another...it almost seems selfish to NOT use your God given talent to help another show their vision to many. If a painter only paints what they want, when they want and lets' their families suffer because they can't help pay the bills...to me that is very selfish.

Where does that leave me? I can very clearly dictate which art is for others and for myself. But I would rather take control and do the art that I want AND make money! Who wouldn't right? Seems like many, many, many cannot understand that simple perspective.

BUT NOW I have the answer that really works best for me. And this is a good thing for you too. I realize that I can do just about anything. So that is part of my problem. If I want to see an image I can visualize it. If I want to paint an image it is generally for others to see what I envisioned or for their collection. But for me, it was always a question of wheather I SHOULD paint for myself because it seemed so selfish. I mean it was not going to do anything for others, so why waste my time? And that lead to the confusion about the art world and the business of art. I felt like it was necessary for me to paint and draw for others, to earn AND for myself because that was what "Real" artists do. So then that left little time for my family. Which of course was not what I wanted.

My new course of action as laid out in the BLOG entry: ART ANSWER describes the business and moving it forward to actually cull some money out of it WHILE helping others. But that still left the question about my art and what it should be about. I feel today that the answer is to make tattooing my art. No longer will I paint or draw for myself UNLESS I have the time, because there is really no need. This will eliminate a huge portion of my work, which painting had become...I would feel guilt while I worked because there was so many other things that I could have been doing at that time! And this will give my customers the best of me.

See that was another thing that I needed to address. My tattoos. I have people all the time tell me that I should do what I want, but then they fight me about the sessions, time, during the tattoo and sometimes even over the design. Then there are others that want a huge piece for no money, demand all my time, and STILL bitch about the pain! But now it is a matter of understanding the difference between working for others and for myself WITHIN tattoos. That means to me now that those that want a Masterpiece will get one and I will take into account there desires because the tattoo is all about them. But those that really want MY art, those that can actually pay me for the time it takes, (and is willing to take the tattoo sessions) will get an ULTIMATE MASTERPIECE. This I will feel is my own art done on you.
